Rockin' grandaddy

...continued from front page

Like the late great Satchmo, Gil has an awesome ability to combine blowing his horn with vocals. His voice has a wonderful warm and husky timbre that sounds like the product of a life time spent playing up. His voice tells its own stories, with or without lyric.

An American, Gil Askey is the real McCoy when it comes to jazz. He’s met and played with famous jazz performers such as Nat ‘King’ Cole, and is called upon by contemporary acts, such as Melbourne’s Cat Empire, for inspiration.
I was not alone in my revere for this granddaddy of jazz. My friend and fellow jazz fan, Jo Cuttler, also enjoyed the performance.

“Gil is a real character and I enjoy the stories he shares about his life time in jazz, particularly from the early days in America. He is fabulous on the trumpet and always takes his audience on an interesting journey,” said Jo.

I’d give him an A+. What an inspiration – rock on granddaddy!
